Layaways have been used by department stores for decades to increase their sales of high end items. Experienced retailers such as Wal-Mart and K-Mart understand that customers would be willing to buy high priced items if they could make incremental payments. Since the retailer keeps the item until it is paid in full, the retailer is really not taking any risk.
You should consider employing the same type of a layaway strategy when selling wholesale children’s clothing.
Although the children’s clothing that you are reselling might be priced relatively low, you don’t know what other bills your customers might have. By giving them an option to set aside the Ecko baby outfit that they have their eyes set on you will be able to both sell more, and create goodwill in your customers’ minds, which will translate into loyalty and future sales.
